As Unitarian Universalists we have a very iffy relationship with the concept of sin; and for good reasons! Many of us grew up in religious communities where the idea of sin was used to make us feel tainted and unworthy. What if, in our eagerness to feel justified, we have failed to pay attention to some of the historical consequences of an excessive optimism about human nature?

Originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, Pedro and his wife, Ana, moved to Brevard in 2006. Pedro retired from the University of Puerto Rico after 33 years as a professor and administrator. He has a B.A. in Modern Languages from the University of Puerto Rico, an M.S. in French from Georgetown University, an M.A. in Religion from the Evangelical Seminary of Puerto Rico, and a Ph.D. in Theology and Literature from Emory University. Between 2008 and 2015 he worked as Instructor of Spanish at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He has recently published a collection of homilies under the title, “The Holy Gospel of Uncertainty.”
