September’s theme is “Invitation.” Accordingly, I invite you to join me in exploring the topic of Fundamentalism and Doubt. Writer Ann Lamont says that doubts are the ants in the pants of faith. That being said, one of the challenges on planet earth is co-existing with others who are more theologically certain than we are about the nature of the universe, and are not too shy about forcing those beliefs on others, in sometimes violent ways. We, as UUs, are taught to cherish our doubts. Perhaps by attempting to understand the fear that the religious fundamentalist has and how he or she has come about those fears, we may enable ourselves to move from our own fears about them, coming to a place of not only tolerance – but also acceptance.
