For over 20 years, UU members have volunteered to drive Interfaith Assistance Ministry clients home with their supplies of food and clothing. One of the first to recognize this need and organize a response to it was UUFH member Connie Harris, who continued as a dispatcher until she retired this past fall. Another early UUFH member was the late George Hochschild. Our team usually provides more than 200 rides a year, but in the past six months alone, our small crew has given 116 rides.

IAM has always been extremely grateful for our service and calls us the UU Drivers, while we often refer to ourselves as the IAM Drivers. Under either name, the service is the same: when IAM calls, UUFH sends a car and driver to take the client home, usually on short notice. These clients are our neighbors here in Henderson County. They are in critical need of food and clothing but have no way to get things home.

Helping them in this small way is a very satisfying form of volunteer work. Unfortunately, over the last few months, the number of UU drivers has dwindled due to illness or death. We need drivers! Please consider joining our team for even a few months. You will find the experience to be very rewarding. Contact Pat Wakeley or email the office for more information and to sign up.

If you can help, now is the time. Thank you.
