I have been a religious educator for many years and one thing has always remained true for me: that we offer our children and youth a great gift. We provide them with information, then encourage them to think for themselves and ask questions about things they don’t understand. We don’t tell them what they must think or believe; we offer them the Seven Principles in simple language to help guide them on their own spiritual paths. We offer them age appropriate lessons on important issues and moral and ethical decision-making. We introduce them to other people’s beliefs so they might better understand others and find our common ground. We provide opportunities for service to help them learn how their efforts can help other people. These are some of the things we offer in our religious education program, and our hope is that all of this enriches the lives of the families of this congregation.
RE JULY ACTIVITIES
UUFH Yard Sale – Calling all youth! We need your help on Sunday, July 5, right after the service, to help move the donations from the office and the log cabin to Fellowship Hall. We need strong backs and pick-up trucks. (Could this be the beginning of a country song?) Please contact Gwen Pernie (glpernie@belsouth.net) if you can join us!
Moral Monday – Defend Our Voting Rights July 13 in Winston-Salem. UUA President Peter Morales has accepted the invitation of NC-NAACP President Rev. William Barber to come to Winston-Salem for a Mass Moral Monday March for Voting Rights and Justice at 5pm on July 13. This is a great opportunity to show our children and youth what it means to be Unitarian Universalists in Action!
Our RE Summer of Service continues – If you haven’t signed up to lead a Sunday this summer please contact me or Karen Bryant and we will direct you to the online sign-up link. We have some ideas for projects and welcome your ideas. Please don’t miss your chance to volunteer and be part of our Summer of Service!
Vicki’s Vacation – I will be on vacation from Sunday, July 12, through Friday, July 31, but I will be available by email while I am away. The UUFH Office will be closed the last week of July and first week of August.
Tubing on the Davidson River, Sunday, August 16, 10:00am-2:00 pm – Every summer the RE Program takes one Sunday to float down the Davidson River in Pisgah Forest. We will meet at Davidson River Tubing (at the entrance to the National Pisgah Forest). The RE Activities Fund will cover the cost of the tube rental. Bring a picnic lunch. This activity is safe for young children!
