On Monday, January 18, some of our youth braved the cold weather and got up early on their day off from school to attend the MLK Unity Breakfast. It was well worth their effort. The music and dancing were very good, and the keynote speaker, Erik Dowdy, was quite inspiring.
Dowdy said, “I ask for you to envision an empowered society in Hendersonville where all people work together to increase voting statistics, to increase job opportunities, to eradicate domestic violence, to erase child abuse, and to attack substance abuse problems so that drug trafficking and gang expansion cannot exist.” His words were powerful, and I think they resonated with all who were there. Imagine if we all came together to make his dream a reality.

February Field Trip
On February 21, our 4th-12th grade youth will attend a worship service at Biltmore Baptist Church. This is a “mega” church, and we believe it will be an interesting experience for our youth. So far, we have visited Jubilee and the Buddhist Center; next month we are planning a trip to a Friends’ Meeting House to learn more about how Quakers worship together. Our hope is that, through these varied worship experiences, our youth will gain a greater understanding of how others practice their faith.
Jim’s Return
Our children and youth are looking forward to Jim’s return this month. They will take part in our congregation’s Welcome Back celebration. Let’s all join together to let Jim know how much we have missed him during his sabbatical!
