MUSIC is an integral and valued part of worship and congregational life at UUFH. It imparts message, beauty, and inspiration for all to hear. Our musical offerings are as diverse as our congregation. They range from traditional to contemporary, folk and blues to jazz, to world music, gospel and spirituals.
Music is shared by our adult and children’s choirs, selections are played by pianists, and music is performed by various vocal and instrumental guest musicians to enrich our Sunday morning services, special services, and the life of the congregation. Everyone participates in music-making on Sunday mornings by singing from the rich and varied legacy of UU song sources, especially “Singing The Journey” and “Singing The Living Tradition.”
Our Musical Groups
UUFH CHOIR provides music that enriches our Sunday services, and the spiritual/musical life of the congregation. Participants in choir enjoy making music together, being in fellowship with one another, and in turn nurture their own spiritual lives. Choir anthems are drawn from a wide spectrum of musical styles – traditional, contemporary, folk, blues, jazz, world music, gospel, spirituals and perhaps occasionally a longer work..
The UUFH Choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings, and sings in Sunday services 2-3 times a month. You are invited to come and “try us out” by attending a Tuesday evening rehearsal. You’ll be warmly welcomed. The ability to sing on pitch, and to have some knowledge of reading music are needed for choir participation. To learn more about being in the choir, please speak with Katherine Price at 693-3157, email or speak with any choir member.
EXPRESS CHOIR is for the occasional singer. They sing once every 8-10 weeks in the morning service. Rehearsal is after the service the Sunday before and then before the service the morning they sing.
YOUTH SINGERS is our vocal music group for children in grade 2 through grade 7. In this group we explore and develop our growing voices, learn the joy, delight, and discipline of singing together, and embark on a journey into the world of song. From traditional to contemporary, we sing in musical styles from around the world, sometimes in different languages. We also learn songs that reinforce our UU principles and sources.
Youth Singers participate frequently in Sunday Worship services throughout the year, both in the chalice lightings, and in “special song” slots. Occasionally we sing a joint anthem with the adult choir. The congregation loves to hear the Youth Singers.
At times, young RE instrumentalists and solo vocalists perform as part of the morning service. Also various youth music groups come together to play songs on boomwhackers, and to add drumming to special services.
Music Committee
The Music Committee meets monthly, and collaborates with the Music Director to present the music program for our Fellowship. The music program includes adult and youth choirs. On Sundays outside the contract range of the music director, we use a variety of internal and guest musicians to provide music for services. Through our efforts and planning, music is provided for all Sunday services, and special services such as Christmas Eve.
How to join the Music Committee: musical ability is not a requirement to become a member of the Music Committee, only the desire to volunteer your help and service to musical life at UUFH. For more information please contact Richard Maybin or Katherine Price.
Become involved in music at UUFH. If you love music, and want to find a way to become more involved, either by singing, playing an instrument, or working behind the scenes in a volunteer capacity, we welcome your participation.
Please contact Katherine Price (828-693-3157), Richard Maybin, or any choir member for more information.
