Let’s Talk. Let’s learn to talk about important things. Maybe even difficult things. Let’s tell a little of our story. Let’s touch what’s on our heart. And in the process, let’s connect. Let’s reach across some of the things that divide us. Let’s call up some of our courage and a small commitment of our time. Let’s show up. Let’s practice so that we might actually become the beloved community we talk about.

Last month, Charlie and Pam Rogers led an event called “Turning Conflict Into Community” in which everyone did what I just described. I I enjoyed being part of the steering committee that “Created this community-wide gathering to bridge divides through dialogue.” Some of our UUFH members attended. Pam wrote an article for our local papers. It’s posted on the Charter for Compassion International website. Here’s the link to read more.

I like what Rev. Mark Stanley of Trinity Presbyterian said, “Because of today’s political tensions, there is a critical need to connect, decrease anger and increase mutual understanding. The moment is upon us to find a way to deeper relationships. Having the courage to dialogue with someone who holds a different political view is a powerful first step.”

Everyone was excited by what they experienced, and wanted us to schedule more such opportunities. So we have, and the next gathering is here at UUFH. We’re hosting on Thursday June 8, 6-8pm (before dark!). Save the date.

We are not only hosting the evening event, but Charlie and Pam will be leading two additional workshops for us; one on Compassionate Listening and the other titled Words Matter on Sundays May 7th and 21st, 12:30 – 2:30 after the service. A light lunch will be provided and child care on request. (Call the office by Wed. before.) [See workshop write up on page 5.] These sessions are opportunities for you to begin to create connections across divisions you feel in your life wherever they might occur. Yes, you really can begin to become the change you want to see.

Bringing that same thought and energy forward, Rev. Michael Carter and I are offering two new sessions of our On the Subject of Race series. These will focus on the challenges and possibilities for dismantling the effects of racism in our Association and in our congregation as well as in our selves. Thursday evenings, May 25th and June 1st, 6 – 8 pm (before dark). See Michael’s write up on page 5. We are excited. Again, this is an opportunity open to us and opening before us. Let’s step into it so that we might become the change we want to see.

Let’s talk. Let’s learn to talk about important things. Together.
