This reflection could just as well be titled “A Stone of Hope.” Dr. King begins his piece in our hymnal (no. 584) talking about our “single garment of destiny” and ends with the words of hope. Our hopes for peace, justice and right living reside in, and must be lived out of, our mutuality. At Nelson Mandela’s memorial, President Obama used the South African word, Ubuntu for this connected way of living: “we achieve ourselves by sharing ourselves with others, and caring for those around us.” How we live together is social action. Hmm…
