“Christ” was not Jesus’ last name. At least in terms of family name. “Christ” is a Greek translation of the Hebrew word for “the anointed one.” Which brings us to the subject of oil because oil was the substance used to anoint Kings in ancient times. But for our distant ancestors, oil was not just an ordinary substance. Rather, it was believed to have contained a power; it had “mana”– the powerful, effective and productive. In this reflection, we will take a look at how the man Jesus became the Christ, the “mana personality” and the implications for our lives today.
