When Susan Holt became a member of UUFH, she had already attended for five years, participated in a meditation group, and participated in her first covenant group.

She came with a varied background — a Methodist upbringing and years with Quakers and several UCC churches. The UU principles that most drew her were the acceptance of different spiritual paths and “a free and responsible search for truth and meaning.”

These became the basis for a reflection she shared with the congregation after studying for months under the late Rev. Joan Kahn-Schneider in a supportive group of novice sermon writers.

Susan enjoys the stretch that comes with adult programs, from UU history, to current issues, to Soul Matters sharing. As a teacher with the preschool class one Sunday a month, though, she learns just as much from the youngest members of the congregation — “by your students you’ll be taught.” It’s a great experience with supportive families, and Vicki Benavides makes it fun for everyone involved.

Susan is a long-time Scottish Country dancer, and last year took up square dancing, where she bumps into other UU dancers. She hikes, writes a little, enjoys her grandchildren, and volunteers with the Backpack Program and the 7th Avenue Community Garden. Having left her work as a speech-language pathologist two-and-a-half years ago, Susan says she could not be more grateful to be enjoying that busier-than-ever-retirement-life she kept hearing about all those years.
