Originally from New York City, Barbara and Michael retired to WNC last year after 30 years with the Foreign Service, working with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The Yates both enjoy travel – and that’s a good thing since, in their work, they lived in nine different countries!

But they are not really “newcomers” here. Barbara and Mike have been connected to UUFH for a number of years. Ever since their two boys (now wonderful adults) were in a National Wildlife Federation summer camp here, the couple has regularly returned to this area and to UUFH while on vacations.

Some 15 years ago, they bought their home in Cedar Mountain, with a vision of living here permanently in retirement. Now these two wildlife enthusiasts enjoy daily walks in the woods and say that each day still feels a bit like vacation!

But they haven’t retired from serving others. Currently, Mike is a member of UUFH’s Board of Directors and serves as secretary. Barbara is active on our Social Justice Outreach Team and a member of the Dream Team project. Both have also reached out to our larger community by volunteering at IAM. Additionally, Mike has given presentations at local universities, sharing experiences and valuable lessons learned in international development.

Following their long-established pattern, the Yates are happy to be finding ways to give back in their new home. And we are grateful for all they have to offer!
