Making the DREAM a Reality
Recipients and supporters attended the Second Annual DREAM Scholarship Breakfast, held recently at St. James Episcopal Church in Hendersonville. The Henderson County Dream Scholarship was formed by the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Hendersonville in 2012 after the Dream Act failed to become law. It is funded by six faith communities. The Scholarship supports local Henderson County students who graduate from a private or public high school and who face the mandate of out-of-state tuition costs at a public college or university.
Following breakfast, Larry Winecoff of St. James Church, welcomed those gathered; Elli Withers offered the invocation and blessing. An address on The Importance of Education was presented by guest speaker Nancy Bulow, recently retired Instructional Coordinator for Adult Education & Literacy and Occupational Spanish at Blue Ridge Community College.
The audience was fortunate to hear from two DREAM Scholarship recipients. DREAMer Edgar spoke about his experiences working in maintenance, where he gained confidence and learned valuable skills. He now plans to work toward a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Always interested in the medical field, DREAMer Daniel plans to continue schooling in a Physician’s Assistant Program. His aspiration is to become a cardiologist.
Scholarships are awarded to high quality candidates who meet the criteria of GPA, test scores, extracurricular involvement and activities, letters of recommendation and documentation of financial need. Scholarships are used primarily to support students attending the community college system or an accredited institution of higher learning.
Individuals, businesses and organizations are welcome to join in this worthwhile effort. To learn more about the DREAM Scholarship, contact Michele Burnette.
