Susan Langer says the “driving force of the human mind is fear, which begets an imperious demand for security in the world’s confusion…”. Fear can be a good thing. It can keep us safe, secure, and can even save our lives. It is wise to be afraid of a mother bear robbed of her cubs. But what about the fear of a person whose skin color is different from ours or a person whose religion is different from ours? There are normal, healthy, natural, rational fears and there are irrational, unhealthy fears. We call the latter, phobias. It is important that we reflect from time to time on our fears, and come to some recognition of whether they are rational or irrational.
